The President of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, reported that the Government is seeking a humanitarian solution to the situation of Venezuelans in the country irregularly.
Since at least 2016, nearly 5 million Venezuelans have left their country, according to the United Nations Refugee Agency. They have done so to escape poverty and deteriorated health and social services.
It is estimated that at least 30,000 Venezuelans settled in the Dominican Republic, and 97% of them have settled irregularly, according to figures from the Movement of Venezuelans Living in the Dominican Republic (Moverd).
«We are looking for a humanitarian solution to this issue; Besides, we owe Venezuela a lot. At very difficult times he received us,» President Abinader said in an interview conducted by the newspaper Diario Libre.
Abinader said Venezuela has been an ally of the Dominican Republic since the struggle for democracy.
