The Dominican Republic began the recovery of tourism activity on Thursday «firmly», tourism Minister David Collado said after several hotels opened its doors.
«It’s early October and here we are complying. Today we started the recovery of tourism firmly,» the official said as he led the reopening of the operations of the Dreams Dominicus La Romana hotel, according to a statement from Tourism.
The Dominican Republic reopened its borders on 1 July, however, in the first month the hotel occupancy was only 5%.
The arrival of foreign tourists fell by 88% in July and by 87.4% in August, compared to the same months last year, according to official data.
Against this backing, President Luis Abinader called last month on all hotel chains to reopen their doors from October 1 as part of the plan to relaunch this sector, heavily hit by the crisis caused by the coronavirus.
